St Helens self storage manager Darren

We caught up with St Helens store manager Darren Callan (pictured on the right, alongside co-worker Liam) in the latest of our Meet the Team series, to pose some serious, and some silly, questions. Read on to get to know Darren and his role at Store First.

What’s your full name and job title?

Darren Callan – store manager at Store First, St Helens.

Before working here, what was the most unusual or interesting job you’ve had?

I used to have a job working as a mixologist in a cocktail bar back in the day. This was one of the best jobs I have ever had and was great fun.

If you could swap jobs with one person in the company, who would it be and why?

Operations director Oliver Kitson. I would love to learn more about the operational side of the business, but I would probably want to be back at store after a few days 🙂

What 3 words do you think best describe Store First?

Honest, reliable, competitive.

What 3 words do you think best describe you?

Funny, loving, enthusiastic.

What’s the most challenging thing you’ve ever had to do here?

As a new store it’s been quite a challenge establishing a new company to the local area and getting the store known.

What’s your favourite film/film quote?

Home Alone – “I’m eating junk and watching rubbish! You better come out and stop me!”

What’s your proudest moment at Store First?

Being a new store it has to be our first customer through the door. I’m sure there will be more proud moments yet to come.

What is an interesting, random fact about yourself?

I’m not really that interesting 😉 but before working in self storage I used to be a chef and had the opportunity to work with Mark Prescott, one of the best top 10 chefs in the UK, voted alongside Gordon Ramsay and Rick Stein, at the Mulberry Tree in Wrightington, which had 2 AA Rosettes.

Do you have a work nickname? What is it?

DC as in DC Comics, I got this from playing poker one day and it has just stuck from then on.

What’s your most embarrassing moment at work?

I don’t have one, YET!!

What’s your favourite place to travel to?

Torquay. Me and the girlfriend love to get away for the weekend every year, it’s an amazing place with friendly people, great food and great live music every night.

How do you define success?

Achieving goals and happiness.

If a film was made of your life, who would you want to play you and why?

Jim Carrey – I think he would play me very well 🙂

If you could be any person in history for a day, who would it be and why?

John Keats, I would have loved to get into his head, he was a very good writer and a legend at that.

If you could interview any person in history, who would it be and why?

This is a tough one. I would probably interview Marilyn Monroe, but I wouldn’t really interview her – I would just rather get a little tipsy and have a dance 🙂

If you could only drink one drink for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?

Well if you would have asked me 3 weeks ago I would have said Strongbow Original, but since taking a trip down to Revolution on the docks it has to be a pornstar martini. The passionfruit is the icing on the cake, it’s only Monday and I’m thinking martinis!

If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?

Steak and chips with peppercorn sauce. I absolutely love steak.

If you could be an animal for a day, what animal would you be and why?

A lion. I have a love for these wild beauties. They are the kings of the land and even get to sleep for 18 hours a day – I barely sleep for 8 :/

If you were stuck on an island and could only take 3 things with you, what would they be and why?

A car door – if it get hot I can wind the window down. A tap for nice fresh water and a fishing rod to keep my belly full.

Tell us something about yourself that people would be surprised to know.

Not really much to say on this, I’m quite boring!

Tell us a little about you and your family.

I am privileged with a beautiful family and a loving home, we love to spend time together as a family.

Who is your idol and why?

I don’t have an idol, but I hope my kids grow to see me as one.

What is your guilty pleasure?

Crisps with chocolate at the same time. Has to be cheese and onion Walkers though!

What’s your favourite TV show?

Spooks, oh no, sorry – Silent Witness.

What’s the oldest thing in your fridge?

French mustard, I know it’s old but it’s nearly full, I have hardly used it so it’s staying there for the foreseeable.

Do you play any instruments or have any talents or hobbies?

I always wanted to play the drums when I was younger but that didn’t work out, I think I went through every hobby on the planet when I was a kid. But now I’m older I have to say I love playing live cash poker at the casino, I love the thrill of having to read other players and bluffing, ”I’m a big bluff”. I’m working towards a full time career playing poker, haha 🙂

Do you have any weird phobias?

I hate daddy long legs, I won’t go on!!

If you could choose only one superpower, what superpower would you choose?

To fly. Not only do I love lions, but also birds of prey. I’ve always wanted a hawk, but unfortunately I don’t have the time and commitment to offer. I see people shooting game for a living but these working birds are so much better than a gun.
